What a day!

Yesterday I finally managed to get ten some decent sleep, nearly six solid hours! When I woke up I realized what a mess the house was. I had been picking up things but hadn't actually cleaned anything. I roused my husband from his office, he was spacing out watching YouTube videos, and got to work. We cleaned the whole house, then got to work on cooking.

Our weeks have been so hectic over the last few months that I've started cooking a weeks worth of meals on Sunday. I didn't have time last week so I wanted to make up for it this week. So I planned to try several new recipes. With a bit of help from my husband I made more than enough. There hadn't been enough time, or brain power, to make up a menu or shop so I used what I already had on hand.
I started with spinach soufflĂ© stuffed meatloaf. I made a dense meatloaf mixture, pressed it into the sides and bottom of a loaf pan and covered it with sliced ham. I then sliced mozzarella into strips and lined that down the middle. I finished filling it with spinach souffle. Once full I folded the sides down and sealed it. There was some cheese leftover so I used that to top it and baked it till it was a golden brown.

Chicken was on sale so I bought a lot of it. I sliced some boneless breasts and marinated them in some terriyaki marinade I made up. Once they were ready I covered them with pineapple, peppers and onions. The whole mixture went into a covered baking dish. Once it was cooked there was a fair bit of liquid. I mix up a cornstarch slurry and thickened it into a sauce.

The remainder of the chicken breast was marinated in a balsamic mixture then baked. Once it was cooled I sliced it thin. I followed that up with mushrooms, green pepper, onion, green olives and soaked them in a homemade vinaigrette. Topped with penne straight from the pot and covered with a tight lid all of the flavors co-mingled into a delicious pasta salad with chicken.

The day before I had cooked up a pot of beans with the skin from our homemade smoked bacon. I mashed them into a 9x13, topped it with spicy salsa and quesadilla cheese. That didn't last long. My husband kept eating throughout the day and finished it off last night. Obviously he enjoyed it. I managed to sneak some for myself once he was stuffed. It was easily the best bean dip I'd had in a long time.

After that all I had was leg quarters which I split into thighs and legs. The thighs were skinned, coated in starch, and baked with Cholula, Texas Pete, and vinegar buffalo style. I added baked potato and corn on the cob. To go with that I made some buttermilk ranch dressing.

Next was the legs that I baked crunchy country style. It seemed incomplete so I made up a pot of raspberry BBQ sauce to go along. That might sound weird but it's lower in sugar, better in flavor and more importantly I had the ingredients on hand.

Making hte BBQ sauce reminded me I still hadn't tried the pickles I had made last week so I pulled them out of the cupboard for a taste test. I'm new to making pickles but they were easily the best kosher pickles I had made yet.

Now I have plenty of food all ready to eat in the fridge. I can devote the rest of the week to working, writing, and not have to deal with take out or delivery. As fun as it is some times to go out to dinner I prefer home cooking over everything.

Safety Ropes

"I enjoyed how this book continued right where the first one left off. This author has used a great mix of steamy and humor in this story. There were some parts that made me literally laugh out loud. I can't wait to see where the relationship leads and what other fun things this couple comes up with."

After finally giving in to the passion between them Kurt and Mandy rise to greet a new day. But while some questions were answered many more remain. How deep are the feelings growing between them? Keep Her Safe

Keep Her Safe
"The characters are fun. I enjoyed the original story plot. The leading lady had some issues, it was good to see her work through some of her issues. The leading guy was a good character and I liked seeing the change his character made. The friendships are awesome. I really liked the different personalities. Can't wait to see what this author comes up with."

"I love how the author gets in the main character's head and you see all her self doubt about herself and everything that she has been through in life. You also see her love interest working things out in his own head to overcome everything he has thought should be a certain way only to realize he didn't give the main character enough credit. Can't wait to read the next book and see where things lead between them!"

"The plot is original. both the H and h are strong without being jerks. I'll probably try another book by this author"

Obligation forces stoic and reserved Kurt to accompany Mandy on a trip to the mountains with her friends. Mandy is fresh out of an abusive relationship and she is determined to find herself, and her sexuality, again. After failing to keep her safe before, Kurt is determined that no one will hurt her again. In order to do that he has to let go of his old pains, and see Mandy as more than just his old friend's little sister.

In Loves Shadow

Shout out post to my buddy and fellow romance author Jin Okubo and his latest work.

Kaoru In Loves Shadow
        Jin Okubo

Robert would love nothing better than to go unnoticed.
Kaoru takes the role of huntress. She could care less about his desires. He has been marked as her prey.
Love blooms in the city of angels.
Still... love has a tendency to trap, crush, and cast aside the unworthy.

Excerpt from In Loves Shadow

Starbucks

There was just something special about the late December snow. It was not as cold as February, but the slight chill did let you know that winter was upon you. She so loved the cold these days. Whether it was her thoughts on how she was raised or the cold emptiness of winter she loved the solitude of her life. Living solitary in that big house was nothing more than a dream to her, though not one that she imposed on herself but had become used to being in, yet… from time to time it did not feel real. The mere idea that she would need to share it with someone, was beyond her at the moment. Still… she found herself looking at him from across the room every chance that she would get.
He was a squirrel of a man the way he moved in and out of the Starbucks. Still, once a week he would run in and order the same double shot of espresso and vanish out the door. Such uniqueness was to be admired in a time when people tried so much to fit… in.
What the hell could have him in such a rush? He was in and out of sight so fast that her thoughts were still forming as she watched him. There was little to the room to be admired, and having this distraction was one of her little joys. Taking a look around the room she would see the boring, the plain, and the utter useless cardboard cutout humans that made up society.
To her left, without even turning her head, she knew who was sitting there. The rancid smell of cigar smoke stung her sensitive nose. If she were to turn her head, she would have seen the grotesque representation of a human being as the man sitting there. Had she bothered to look there he would be in the same tired shirt. Part of his gut lifting the bottom of his shirt, a shirt that was never really meant to be worn untucked. But this man wanted to make a statement. What that statement was, well no one really knew.
Still had she bothered to get a side glance in there he would be sitting a cafĂ© latte with a glaze doughnut. The doughnut itself being half devoured through a gaping hole that he called a mouth. Lips so trained that even though there was no smoking allowed, they still held firm to a cigar. He would light the beast as soon as he was out of earshot from the yuppie know-it-alls who had nothing better than to try and force others to live a certain way. In a way she admired the slob of a man for standing up for some semblance of freedom. At least he was not hiding the person that society as a whole cared not to see. With so many out there being fake in one sense or another it was becoming difficult in today’s world to see true life from the fiction which we perceive.
As she headed towards the line to place her order Kaoru’s eyes caught a view of one of the yuppies, which she detested so, rights for all as long as the yuppies approve of those rights, cancerous beings sitting in the chairs and tables across the room from her. It was an amazing sight to see. The paleness of her skin was clearly meant to give the sign of health. Yet, there was a certain view, which some would see as this woman being nothing but a plague on society. Her clothing nothing more than draped fabric over a school skeletal display. Everything about her was a complete contradiction to the idea of health.
That sad excuse for a woman had been standing in front of her as she prepared to order. Her order was as confusing as the idea of this person coming into a Starbucks for a drink. Excuse me, I will be having a soy, non-fat, decaf, macchiato, and make sure that it is a natural no sugar mocha powder. The order still burned in Kaoru’s mind was nothing less of disgusting, vile, putrid thing to order. That was not the end of the pain, which Kaoru had put up with. The sorry imitation of a human had actually turned around and faced her, all to give a reason for such an order as if anyone else in the world would care for what reason she had ordered such a thing.

Author Bio:

There are few interesting things that can be said about my home town. I grew up in a mildly racist country town in the Santa Barbara mountains, though I am hopeful that things have changed there. Having grown up during the great migrant issues of California during the 80’s and 90’s, I was able to experience some of the issues when I was getting  my higher education in university. The biggest part of my life was finding my self-identity, which was never truly clear to me as a youth.

Upon finishing my university studies I moved to the beautiful country of Japan only to bounce back and forth between the U.S and Japan for a couple of years. Finally, I received my Japanese citizenship in the spring of 2014. My life has been filled with many strong women which is one of the contributing factors for my protagonists tending to be women.
I am a lover of classical literature. I hope to bring in a new style of classical literature to the current age of fast paced easy to read cookie cutter style novels that are being pushed out in mass across the world. Choosing to stick to my own style of writing rather than to write for easy to sell books has made my work difficult to get into, yet it is the joy of writing that is the reason as to why I do things the way I do.
There is always the temptation to write easy to digest books that are made to sell, rather than books that are written for an experience reader and very few writers have mastered both.  As I  work to improve my craft, I am inching my way ever closer to that perfect balance of books that will satisfy the modern reader and the reader who focuses more on content rather than face value.
I would like to make a comment to my would be readers: “I write to challenge my reader. As you face this challenge you will find that you will grow to love the characters I have created. This love will bring a deeper understanding to my writing and my characters more.”

Always learning

I've been struggling with my latest series. It's about a one of my favorite characters, Stu from the Mandy series. Stuart is an awesome guy, sweet and quiet and goes put of his way to help his friends. He's also a bdsm dominant and has faced a lot of pain, heart break, and criticism for the way he likes to have sex. He keeps that part of his life hidden to avoid the stares and stereotypes associated with that. He's also a self made billionaire, which he keeps under wraps for the same reasons.
I totally understand the first part of his internal conflict. What I don't understand is the second part. I grew up poor. My parents worked hard and got us to middle class. But in the center of my psyche I am still that girl that grew up a poor country girl. I don't fully get being rich or the attitude that goes with it. Just like a person that grew up rich will never fully understand my attitude.
I spent two very frustrating weeks going over the same chapter, writing and discarding it. I finally started venting to my husband about it. He instantly perked up and started answering my questions that I had been stewing over the whole time. After taking notes and asking several more questions it finally dawned on me.
I knew he had grown up wealthy, upper class. But I didn't realize just how wealthy his parents had grown up. Upper crust old school wealthy. I knew his grandmother had a maid\cook and butler but I assumed it was because she was elderly. No, she was just that wealthy and that was the standard for her family. It was such a normal every day thing for him he didn't talk about it much.
We've been married for 11 years, together for thirteen. I was shocked at the depth of insight he had into the lives off the millionaires and billionaires. He informed me there is a difference between the two. Being who I am I didn't ask more than I needed to, or ask which of his family members were the millionaires and which the billionaires. You don't ask that about people where I come from. But it did make me insanely happy. After so long together I am still learning things about the man I share a life with, and I love that he can still surprise me.

Fighting like kids

I'll admit, I am kind of an odd person. I am always amused by kids fighting with each other because they come up with the most random arguments and name calling. So the last few hours watching the GOP "debate" has left me with a sore stomach from laughing so hard.
Trump went on a mini tirade about a foreign official using a bad word. Rubio was tweeting during the debate making remarks about Trump. Cruz tried out yelling everyone, cause louder = more right? Carson pleaded, "Can someone attack me?" because he was getting no talking time. And that other guy, uh whoever he is, he had a few well thought out answers so they stopped asking him questions early on. It got so bad Trump asked for the moderator to ask someone else a question and leave him alone.
Hysterical. Too bad these are presidential candidates not kids on a playground. #GOPDebate

Inspiration?

That strange feeling when you wake up from a restless sleep and grab a glass of milk before sitting down at the computer to furiously pound out the scene in your head before it completely dissipates. Fingers flying over the keys, typos be damned. That's what spellcheck is for and I can deal with that after coffee. For now I have to get this out. I have to get it all written down. This fabulous narrative that coalesced in my brain and dragged me from my slumber. This story that won't be stopped, it has to be finished and finished now!

All done. Relaxed. Browsing over it to see what needs to be added and make sure it all makes sense. Then it hits me. I write romance novels. Was this inspiration? Or lovely erotic dream? I light a cigarette and realize, it doesn't really matter in the end. My readers will never know.

Safe or in the Dungeon?

Over the last few months I have seen my book sales on Amazon drop remarkably. I couldn't understand why either. I know that Smashwords is better for self publishing romance novels but after a solid month of 0 sales on Amazon I knew something had to be wrong. After a bit of digging I realized I had been sent to the "Adult" dungeon.

As kinky and fun as that sounds it really isn't. Being in the dungeon means that your book won't show up in a search. Which means no one can find your book or buy it. And no one tells you the safe word. Or the not-so-safe word that you used as a tag that landed you in the dungeon in the first place.

If you are a romance of erotica author that is suddenly noticing a decline in your Amazon sales check here to see if you are labeled as "safe" or "adult". If you do have the adult label check through your tags to figure out what got you flagged. If all of your tags are good take a good look at your blurb too. Check your cover. "Hand bras" are no longer allowed for some reason. Some people have said that the position of female legs might also be a no no. If all else fails email kdp support and ask them why your book got flagged.

I managed to get almost all of my books out of the dungeon and back on the shelves. Already my sales are going back up. Hopefully this post will help others get back to selling and keep the sexy flowing on Amazon.
